With over 35 years’ professional video systems experience, we’re equipped to handle your precious camera and edit master tapes with the care and attention they deserve. That means that we don’t just feed a videotape machine with tapes and let them run while we get on with the crossword (as happens elsewhere). We’ll make sure that each captured or transferred copy is the best there can be.

Transfer direct to DVD or to editable video files on HDD and solid-state media

We can transfer PAL-standard U-Matic Lowband, Highband (BVU) and BVU-SP (U-matic-SP) videotapes in large and small cassette formats. These can go straight to PAL DVD as library access or reference copies or, alternatively, we can capture them to your hard disc or solid state drives in a variety of professional video file formats. These include:

  • 8-bit Uncompressed Quicktime YUV or RGB video
  • 10-bit Uncompressed Quicktime YUV or RGB video
  • Apple ProRes 422 Quicktime (any profile)
  • DVCPro25 and DVCPro50 variants
  • MPEG-4/H.264 in a variety of bit rates
  • Quicktime DV-MOV
  • Microsoft DV-AVI
  • Sequenced DPX (for video archiving)
  • and other formats

UpRes from SD to 1080p using Blackmagic Teranex 2D – no extra charge!

Blackmagic Teranex 2D Digital Video Processor

We’re performing an increasing number of requests to upscale from SD 4:3 to HD 1080p or 720p DigiBeta, Beta-SP, DVCAM and DVCPro using our Blackmagic Teranex 2D digital video processor, and for selected U-Matic based formats (eg: BVU-SP, U-Matic SP) we can even perform this process depending upon the quality of the recording itself.

And before you think that all it does is to stretch your material into a HD window then think again; broadcast TV and OB facility companies, major film and video archives and post-production houses the world over are now specifying Teranex for the simple reason that its HD output from SD masters is just magical. Try it!

We can supply upres material in any of the main ProRes422 profiles, DPX, H.264 and Quicktime 10-bit / 8-bit uncompressed files (note that we can’t supply files as DNxHD at the moment). Please ask for more information. The good news is that it costs you no more to take advantage of Teranex digital processing.

Price of transfers for all U-Matic cassette tapes to DVD or to file is a standard £30.00 incl VAT (PAL). Conversion and transfer of NTSC Lowband tapes is £36.00 incl VAT each.

Please note that this charge applies on a per-tape basis. If you require editable video files, the cost of the external storage media – such as HDDs, Memory Cards, USB Thumb Drives and Solid State drives – is extra (please ask us to quote for that which might suit your needs) or you can supply your own. For PC these should be USB 2.0 or FireWire 400, and for Apple Mac they can be USB 2.0, FireWire 400, Firewire 800 or Thunderbolt.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Is any of your U-Matic videocassettes an AMPEX tape? If so, please read this first.

Please see our PRICES for more detailed information.

Hard Drives and Solid-State Recording Media

We can write your video files out to all portable storage media types. These include:

  • Portable USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 Hard Disk Drives (HDD)
  • FireWire 400 drives (Windows and Apple Mac)
  • Firewire 800 drives (Apple Mac only)
  • Thunderbolt drives (Apple Mac only)
  • SDHC Memory Cards (we advise Class 6 and above)
  • SDXC Memory Cards (we advise Class 6 and above)
  • Sony Memory Sticks
  • USB Thumb Drives (USB Sticks)
  • Bare SATA 2 3.25″ Hard Disc Drives (using our slot-in caddy)

External media will be formatted according to your preference. This may be Apple MacOS Extended, Windows NTFS, exFAT, etc. Remember that FAT 32 formatted media has an individual file capacity limitation of 4GB. Don’t worry, as we’ll format or reformat the drive for you according to need.

Tips on file sizes

Note that when supplying storage media for your captured video files, you’ll need approximately 1GB per minute (yes!) of storage if you require 10-bit Uncompressed Quicktime files. If, on the other hand, you require us to capture your video files in a common “DV” codec, such as Quicktime DV-MOV or Microsoft DV-AVI, then you’ll need only 12GB (approx) per hour of captured media.

Please ask Colin if you require more information or advice.
